Reducing inequalities

How many children in the poorest 20 % of the population of developing countries die before their fifth birthday in comparison to children in the richest 20% *

  • Evidence from developing countries shows that children in the poorest 20 % of the populations are three times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than children in the richest 20%.

  • Despite overall declines in maternal mortality in most developing countries, women in rural areas are still up to three times more likely to die while giving birth than women living in urban centers.

Increasing social and economic inequality, both in each country and between countries, are among the important problems to be found.

To reduce inequalities, policies should be universal in principle, paying attention to the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized populations. Take action!
