Aysha (13) lives in Ethiopia. It takes her a total of eight hours to fetch water from the distant river for herself and the whole family. It is very dangerous to get water from this far. A lot can happen on the way - Aysha can be injured, the water can develop bacteria in the heat. Aysha can also be attacked and raped. All of this happens to girls worldwide on their long and lonely way to water.
62 million Ethiopians of a total population of 105 million lack access to safe water. In rural Ethiopia many women and children walk more than three hours a day to collect water, often from shallow wells or unprotected ponds they share with animals. Recurring droughts result in famine and water-related diseases.
