Virtual water

Virtual water is the "hidden" freshwater used to produce a commodity or service. For example, when we drink a mug of coffee, the water spent on the cultivation of the plant, on packaging and transportation of coffee grains amounts up to 140 liters. This means that we don't just consume the water in the coffee mug.

Every product we consume contains virtual water. When we export products, we are actually exporting our water supply.
