The 17 Goals of the United Nations Member States for a Sustainable Development

Clean water and sanitation

Guess how much water you need each day?

In Turkey each person uses on average 224 liters of water every day, 122 in Germany, in a country facing a water crisis such as Ethiopia the average use is 20 liters in the city, in rural areas between 5 or 10 liters.

Apart from the water used as drinking water or for hygiene we must add "invisible" water, water hidden in the production of consumer goods. If this water is included, the total is 5416 liters per person a day in Turkey and 4000 in Germany.

  • 663 million people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water.

  • In 80 percent of the households that do not have access to water in Africa and Asia women and girls walk for 6 hours a day with a water bottle weighing more than 20 kilograms.

  • 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets or latrines.

  • Each day, nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrheal diseases.
